Engagement Activity: Rhetorical Analysis of an Environmental Justice Meme

Image
This meme is targeted toward people who are part of the Democratic party.  Usually, people who are in the republican party, don't support things like same-sex marriages or abortion being legal.  Usually, the democratic party aren't so conservative.  So, the target audience is people a part of the democratic political party because it makes fun of traditional marriage.  This meme is ironic that Donald Trump supports traditional marriage, and then goes on to say that he's had three of them!  This is what makes the meme funny, is because it's making fun of how traditional marriages may not work out, but Donald Trump won't support untraditional marriage.       People of different political parties clash when it comes to morals.  People of the democratic party, they believe in modern, inclusive, and equal ways of doing things.  People of the republican party believe in traditional, more conservative ways of doing thin...

Environmental Justice Environmental Justice, what is it? Also known as EJ, is the principle that people of all different racial backgrounds should have access to equal protection from the environment.  Every human being should have equal access to a quality of life where economic equality, healthcare, and shelter are sustainable.  In other terms, environmental justice is putting efforts toward eliminating privilege and exploiting someone's health and the use of societal resources.    One of the main aspects that inhibit EJ is the media.  As many people know, the media has a strong impact on issues in the U.S. today.  And the mass media is owned by large corporations.  It makes sense why media reports rarely make the connection on the definition of environment that includes issues of civil rights, housing, employment, or quality of life.  Some media and advertisements on the issue of EJ tend to divert our attention to blaming the behavior of i...

Sense of Place, Solastalgia, Eco-Anxiety and You  Beach - Waimanalo Beach Growing up on an island, you tend to have a very specific sense of place.  Where is a place that is everywhere in Hawaii?  The beach, since the beaches surround the borders of the island of course.  More specifically for me, the beach that I have the most sense of place associated with it is Waimanalo beach.  Time after time again, this specific beach has been the go-to.  "Da spot" as we local Hawaiians call it.  This beach is where my family has had most of our birthday parties or any kind of hangout!  Whenever I'm there, I'm in the present, I'm not thinking about that homework that's due or about having to go to school or work the next day.  Since I basically spent most of my life at this beach, I have a strong emotional connection to it and it's sad to see what has come of it recently.   Ever since I was little, local Hawaiians have been able to go to the b...

Blog Post #4: Final Exam/Essay--Reflection on Content Learning and the ELOs

English 1010 Reflection Throughout this class, I learned about different aspects that I haven’t thought about before.  With assignments that go so deep in the depth of writing, I was able to understand the full process of how to fully craft my writing to make a clear, cohesive piece.  This is a process with which I have not been so engaged so deeply and goes deeper than just the surface.  With the deep process of writing, I clearly understand the writing process and can more effectively communicate ideas through writing when following it.  I have met the Essential Learning Objectives by being able to write more about topics that I’m not very familiar with without getting stuck, and by understanding the credibility of a source before using it as evidence  There were many different forms of engaging writing assignments that got my creative writing juices flowing in different ways.  In class, we would often take notes by following an outline while our p...

Blog Post #3 - Analysis and Evaluation of a Political Advertisement

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3t6bLugtJkQ This advertisement is a short commercial aired by the car company Chevy.  The commercial starts off by showing a girl and her dog named “Maddie” going through the various life events of a typical girl growing up like graduation, a breakup, or even learning to drive.  All of these events where Maddie is there to support her through all of them whether good or bad.  Then the commercial goes back in time to show when this girl first got Maddie, and then she and her parents get into the car to go home.  The commercial ends with the quote “A Best Friend For Life’s Journey”  followed by the gold and silver chevy logo which is featured on all of the cars from that company.   Right off the bat, I knew the primary target audience was dog lovers.  With the plotline of the dog being the girl's best friend through all the different stages of her life.  This has an emotional appeal to the people vi...

Blog Post #2: Analyzing Narrative Transport in a Memorable Story

My mom was telling me a story about how my little sister’s teacher assigned her to sit in between the two naughty kids in her class.  The reason the teacher placed my little sister to sit in between the two kids caused trouble because my little sister is a good student.  So, my mom was saying how my sister was upset because the teacher wouldn’t listen to how my sister felt about being placed in between these two students in her class.  They still cause trouble but since my sister is in between them they just bother her.       What was engaging to me about this story was the fact that I have been in my little sister’s position before.  I know how it feels to be put in between two classmates who just bother you and your teacher uses you as a block between them because they know you are a good student.  I was able to connect with my sister and talk to her about how I experienced this too so she shouldn’t worry.  I ...

English Blog Post #1 biographical sketch

Hi, my name is Kilinaheokalani Neuman or just Kili for short.  I was born and raised on the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i.  I recently moved to Utah to pursue my further education here at SUU.  Having just turned 18, I'm still trying to get the hang of living on my own and being independent.  I just recently got a job on top of school so that's fun.  My family still lives in Hawai'i, and I have three younger siblings, which makes me the oldest of four.  One of my favorite hobbies is baking/cooking.  I just find making something and then getting to enjoy it afterward is so therapeutic and helps when I have a lot on my mind or am stressed out.  As you can imagine in college I have been cooking and baking a lot then by that logic! This is a blog called "Simply Recipes" where they post recipe inspo to get your creative cooking skills flowing - https://www.simplyrecipes.com/  a)  Who do you believe is the intended audience of this blog and w...
